Cultivation in the Metaponto Plain

The Unifruit farm is located in Bernalda, in the province of the famous city of Matera. The land used for cultivating the canary melon and the other fruit and vegetable products that are marketed is part of the Metaponto agricultural district.
The area, which overlooks the Ionian coast of Basilicata, covers 800 square kilometres, is a concentration of art, history and beauty bathed in the true Mediterranean climate, characterised by hot, dry summers and mild winters.
Thanks to redevelopment works and ideal climatic conditions, the Metaponto Plain is now the most luxuriant, fertile and rich agricultural area in the whole of Basilicata and the reference point for production and export of Italian products of excellence in the agri-food sector.
The Metaponto Plain not only benefits from the extraordinary fertility of the land but is also a crossroad for trade and commerce. The area is also strategically located close to one of Italy's main arterial roads and junctions.

Authentic territory and guardian of ancient traditions

The Metaponto Plain benefits from an ideal microclimate and the extraordinary fertility of its soil means that the area is perfect for growing various types of crop. An authentic territory and guardian of ancient traditions that only bears good fruit.
The Metaponto area is perfect for growing canary melons (also known as winter melons), which are highly sensitive to the cold and frost.
This fruit, which for everyone is a symbol of summer and physical well-being, loves the sun and high temperatures – which are not lacking on the Ionian coast of Basilicata – accompanied by a low level of humidity and prefers deep, well-irrigated but drained soils without stagnant water.
