Biodiversity (agro-biodiversity in agriculture) is the highest expression of the Earth's richness and includes all kinds of living organisms.
Protecting biodiversity in agriculture (known as agro-biodiversity) means responding to the need to strike a proper balance between agricultural practices and ecosystems, while preserving the complexity and genetic richness of all the agricultural species in the area (both cultivated and wild).
Over the years, human activity has caused a progressive reduction in the variety of living forms and environments, together with a simplification of landscapes, and this is why we need to intervene with all available instruments to reverse the trend.
What is biodiversity?
Biodiversity is the highest expression of the Earth's richness and includes all types of living organisms in their various forms, together with the ecosystems and habitats they inhabit.
Why is biodiversity important?
Biodiversity is important because it ensures the life and health of all the Earth's inhabitants and the survival of ecosystems within which the various organisms, plants and animals, live in equilibrium with each other.
The organisms that live in an ecosystem also have an influence on it and at the same time, it is the characteristics of a certain environment – such as the climate and humidity – that make life possible for certain species, and not for others.
Altering this balance can lead to the disappearance of the entire ecosystem linked to that area and all its resources, with consequent damage not only to the environment but also to all the animal species, including human beings.
